Rainbow stag beetles are brilliantly colored beetles famous for their iridescent, metallic sheen. The name most often refers to Phalacrognathus muelleri, a species native to northeastern Australia and nearby regions. Appearance Rainbow stag beetles display vivid shades of green, gold, red, purple, and blue that shift in the light. This shimmering effect isn’t just from pigment — it’s caused by microscopic structures in their exoskeleton that reflect light, creating a rainbow-like glow. Males are especially eye-catching, growing up to about 7 cm (including mandibles). They have enlarged, antler-like jaws used to fight rival males during the breeding season. Females are smaller, with shorter and stronger mandibles better suited for feeding and digging. Habitat They are commonly found in rainforests and woodlands of Queensland, Australia.
