What a bubble balancer measures — and what it does not This is worth being straight about, because it decides whether the tool suits your work. A bubble balancer measures static imbalance: the wheel and tire assembly is suspended on a cone at its centre, gravity pulls the heavy spot downward, and the level bubble shows you where and roughly how much. Correct that heavy spot and the assembly will sit at rest in any position rather than always rolling to the same place. What it cannot see is a dynamic couple — an imbalance where the inner half of the wheel is heavy on one side and the outer half is heavy on the other. Statically that assembly can balance perfectly while still trying to steer itself at speed, and detecting it requires a machine that spins the wheel and measures in two planes. A cone that does not self-centre puts the wheel on the shaft slightly off-axis, and the tool then faithfully reports an imbalance that the wheel does not have.
