FOREWORDThis booklet is intended to point out some new directions for thoughtful teachers and parents who are concerned about the musicianly development of their students and offspring. I have no illusions that it is the last word on the subject of rhythmic reading. I do hope that it will encourage others further to develop new and still more practical teaching techniques based on principles that are widely used by experienced musicians in their own performance but have, to date, not been articulated for the benefit of those who teach. If it does nothing more than to encourage the abandonment of teaching habits that have little more to recommend them than habit itself, it will be worth reading.Credit and thanks are due Nell, Ann and Geoff for material and editorial suggestions that have improved this booklet immeasurably.
