Rattlesnake Beans are purple-and green-striped variety of pole bean native to North America. They are typically eaten fresh, although it produces yummy and beautiful dried beans as well. They can reach well over ten feet if given something to climb. As with all legumes, their roots will return nitrogen to your soil. Plant beans in full sun two weeks after the last frost. This bean is suitable for a Three Sisters garden, but take care to pair with a very tall and sturdy corn variety. I was unable to find a detailed primary source about the history of these beans, but it is typically said they originate with the Cherokee nation and/or Hopi tribe. Cherokee people continue to steward this variety today. Grown organically with love and tenderness in the Bruce Peninsula, Ontario, Canada, in the summer of 2023. Germination tested.
