Raymond R Collection Merlot is a 100% California Merlot bottled at 13% ABV in a standard 750ml format. Produced by Raymond Vineyards — a Napa Valley estate founded in 1970 — this expression carries the "Lot No. 3" designation, referencing the specific winemaking team of Stephanie Putnam, Kathy George, and Jean-Charles Boisset who selected and blended the final lots. Quick Facts: ABV: 13% | Origin: California, USA | Varietal: 100% Merlot | Producer: Raymond Vineyards (est. 1970) Production & Heritage Raymond Vineyards was established in 1970 in Napa Valley and is now part of the Boisset Collection under proprietor Jean-Charles Boisset. For the R Collection Merlot, grapes are hand-picked, crushed, and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with full skin contact to maximize color and flavor extraction. The wine then ages for 10 months in a combination of seasoned French and American oak barrels, contributing structure and subtle toasty character without overwhelming the fruit. Tasting Notes Aroma: Rich red and dark fruit aromas lead the nose — blackcurrant and fig dominate, followed by subtle violet and warm baking spice. There is an underlying earthiness that adds complexity beyond straightforward fruit. Taste: The entry is juicy with ripe black cherry and plum, building through a mid-palate of raspberry and toasted almond. A thread of turned earth and spice runs underneath, keeping the wine grounded. Fine, structured tannins provide shape without harshness, and the mouthfeel is notably plush and round. Finish: The finish is medium-long with a toasty vanilla quality derived from its oak aging. Lingering notes of dark fruit and gentle spice taper gradually, leaving a smooth and satisfying close. How to Drink R Collection Merlot This Merlot drinks well at a slightly cool room temperature, around 60–65°F, and benefits from 15–20 minutes of breathing after opening. It requires no decanting but responds well to a wide-bowled glass that lets the aromatics open up. For cocktail use, R Collection Merlot works in a Kalimotxo (red wine and cola), where its ripe fruit and soft tannins create a balanced, refreshing serve. It also performs well in a Red Wine Spritzer, as the plum and berry notes hold up against sparkling water and citrus. For cooler months, use it in a Mulled Wine — the existing spice character and vanilla oak notes integrate naturally with cinnamon and star anise.
