The Artwork Ngapa Jukurrpa - Mikanji This artwork depicts Ngapa Jukurrpa, or Water Dreaming, associated with Mikanji, an important watercourse on the traditional homelands of the Warlpiri Aboriginal people in the remote Tanami Desert region of Central Australia. Although the Mikanji watercourse is usually a dry creek bed, it contains mulju, or natural underground wells which are essential sources of fresh water during the long dry season in the desert. Mikanji features in several interconnected Water Dreaming tracks. In this story, the Water Dreaming travelled from Puyurru, north-west of Yuendumu, to a soakage in the Mikanji creek, where it unleashed a powerful storm. Two elderly Nampijinpa women were sitting beside the soakage. As they strained their eyes toward the sky, tears formed and became rain. Their spirits remain at Mikanji in the form of two ngapiri, or river red gums, growing near the soakage. About the Artist Nicole Napaljarri Stevens is a Warlpiri artist who paints with the world-acclaimed Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation at Yuendumu, a remote Aboriginal community in the Tanami Desert region of Central Australia. Warlukurlangu Artists is an Aboriginal-owned organisation and an important stronghold for the preservation of Warlpiri culture, language and artistic traditions. The Warlpiri people maintain a profound physical and spiritual connection to their ancestral homelands. Their Jukurrpa stories, cultural responsibilities and artistic knowledge have been passed down through countless generations.
