Gansu, circa 1920 This gorgeous sideboard still has its original paintings and deep red lacquer finish, restored and refreshed with a new shiny lacquer. The surface, worn in parts to show the dark pine, has a beautiful patina. The cabinet is from Gansu province and, like many similar pieces from the region, would have been used for storage of grain, rice or other foodstuffs. What was originally a removable panel towards the centre back of the top surface has been sealed, and the three painted panels in the front have been opened up into doors to create a more practical sideboard. The cream door panels have darkened over time and contrast beautifully with the rich red frames. Though now quite worn, the old paintings of vases can still be made out. Shelves have been added to the inside of the cabinet and it would be ideal as a dining room sideboard or for general storage in a living area.
