Minimum: 50+ Seeds Red Leaf Holy Basil 'Tulsi' Seeds (Ocimum tenuiflorum) — The Sacred Herb That Smells Like a Temple Red Leaf Holy Basil is not culinary basil. It shares a genus but occupies an entirely different universe: a clove-scented, camphor-tinted, slightly peppery herb at the center of Hindu spiritual practice, Ayurvedic medicine, and Southeast Asian cuisine for thousands of years. The striking purple-red to deep maroon coloration of leaves and stems creates dramatic ornamental presence that culinary basil rarely achieves. The name 'Tulsi' means 'the incomparable one' in Sanskrit, and the plant is considered the most sacred of all herbs in Hindu tradition, found in every traditional household as a living spiritual presence. The aroma is immediately distinctive: where Genovese basil smells of summer and anise, Tulsi smells of cloves, with warm camphor undertones that make it simultaneously medicinal and intoxicating. Adaptogens, essential oils, and bioactive compounds make Tulsi tea one of the most documented herbal wellness beverages in traditional medicine. In the kitchen, the bold clove-camphor flavor works beautifully in Thai and Southeast Asian preparations. Warm-season annual in most climates, perennial in frost-free zones.
