The Red Lip Goby are part of the freshwater fish Gobies that are highly patterned for camouflaging. As with most Gobies, they have long, thin bodies with fused pelvic fins that form a disc-shaped sucker. This appendage is used to adhere to rocks, corals, and tank walls in the home aquarium. In nature, Red Lip Gobies makes their home in small, rapidly flowing mountain streams with rocky bottoms. Hobbyists should try to replicate this environment in their home aquarium with a rocky bed bottom and high aeration and strong water movement. A fast-moving, oxygen-rich environment can be achieved through the use of powerheads. Make sure the airline tubing connected to the powerhead inlet is drawing in fresh air. The use of a slightly oversized filter will also increase filtration and water movement. Care should be taken to avoid high water temperatures to ensure greater dissolved oxygen content. A tight-fitting lid or canopy is recommended to prevent escape. Algae and other food items growing on or encrusting the rocks in the bottom of the tank are essential food sources that offer beneficial foraging activity. The Red Lip Goby will accept most food items small enough to fit in its mouth. Supplement their diet with foods that sink to the bottom of the aquarium such as a high-quality flake food, sinking carnivore pellets and sinking algae wafers.
