Red Mill Pieris (Pieris japonica 'Red Mill') Red Mill Pieris is a broadleaf evergreen shrub that gives part-shade landscapes year-round structure with a strong spring color moment. New growth emerges in red to bronze-red tones, adding instant contrast in foundation beds and mixed borders. As the season settles in, the foliage matures to glossy dark green, keeping plantings looking tidy and finished. If you want an evergreen anchor that also delivers seasonal color and spring bloom, this is a dependable choice. Distinctive Features This cultivar forms a dense, compact, rounded shrub with glossy evergreen leaves that emerge red to bronze-red in spring before maturing to dark green. In colder weather, foliage can take on a purple-bronze cast, extending interest beyond the growing season. In early spring, it produces showy, drooping clusters of small, urn-shaped white flowers that hang beneath the stems for a soft, layered look. The overall habit stays full and well-shaped, making it easy to use as a clean structural plant in part shade. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun to partial shade, with morning sun and afternoon shade preferred in warmer exposures. Soil: Acidic, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Water: Keep evenly moist during establishment, then water during dry periods to prevent stress. USDA Zones: Zones 5 to 8. Mature Size: Grows about 4 to 6 feet tall and 3 to 5 feet wide. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use as a focal point near an entry where the red spring growth and white flower clusters provide a clear seasonal highlight. Evergreen Grouping: Plant in small groups to create a dense, compact mass with spring interest. Low Maintenance Care Watering: Water deeply during dry spells and avoid letting the root zone dry out completely. Mulching: Mulch with pine bark or shredded leaves to conserve moisture and support acidic soil conditions. Pruning: Prune lightly right after flowering to shape, and remove spent flower clusters if you prefer a cleaner look. Feeding: Fertilize in spring with an acid-loving shrub fertilizer if growth is slow or foliage is pale. Protection: Site in a sheltered location to reduce drying winter wind and summer stress.
