White oak is a light to medium brown, commonly with an olive cast. Grain is straight, with a coarse, uneven texture. This material is quarter sawn which is defined as wood where the annular growth rings intersect the face of the board at a 60 to 90 degree angle. When this lumber is being milled, each log is sawed at a radial angle into four quarters, hence the name. Dramatic flecking is also present in red oak and white oak. Workability White oak produces good results with hand and machine tools. Has moderately high shrinkage values, resulting in mediocre dimensional stability, especially in flat-sawn boards. Can react with iron (particularly when wet) and cause staining and discoloration. Responds well to steam-bending. Glues, stains, and finishes well. Common Uses White oak is commonly used for cabinetry, furniture, interior trim, flooring, boatbuilding, barrels, and veneer.
