Basics Scientific Name: Aphyosemion striatum Family: Cyprinid Origin: Africa, Liberia Quick Facts Care Level: Easy Temperament: Peaceful Lifespan: 2-4 years Water Conditions: 72 -77 °F, pH 6.0-7.5 Maximum Size: 2" Diet: Carnivore Minimum Tank Size: 5 gallons Overview Since they are small, hardy and don't make much of a bioload, they can be kept in relatively small set ups. They do require filtration but it does not need to be strong, and if the keeper is intending to breed them a sponge filter will help reduce fry loss. They will also appreciate live plants. They are usually kept in pairs in species specific tanks for spawning purposes, but will also do fine in most community aquariums with small, peaceful fish. Males should never be housed together as they will fight, except for if the tank is large enough for each male to have his own territory. The tank should have a lid in case of jumping. They can be fed live, frozen, pellet or high quality flake foods. They should be supplemented with bloodworms, tubifex, and daphnia for proper health.
