Canyon de Chelly has been home to people for centuries, and the canyon walls hold that history in layers of red sandstone and shadow. I was on the rim at sunset when the last light began to crawl down the cliffs, turning the rock from rust to deep orange while the bottom of the canyon stayed cool and dark.An ancient pueblo nestles against the base of the wall, small against the scale of the stone. I framed wide enough to show the relationship between human structure and geologic time. The Navajo Nation requires a guide for most access below the rim. I worked from an approved viewpoint and stayed until the light flattened. Desert sunsets are generous until they are not. I remember the quiet more than the color, though the color is what pulls you in first. Redrock Firelight is about warmth held in stone at the end of a day.
