Breeding Platies is one of the easiest aspects of keeping them, as they are livebearers, meaning the females give birth to fully-formed, free-swimming fry. Platies breed readily in community tanks, and if a male and female are present, you can expect regular batches of fry. Females can give birth to 20 to 50 fry every four to six weeks. Providing plenty of hiding spots in the form of plants or decorations will help increase the survival rate of the fry, as adults may eat them if given the chance. If you wish to raise the fry, it is best to separate them into a breeding or nursery tank.
