The refectory of Vallombrosa Abbey, one of the most richly decorated interiors within the monastery. The room forms part of the 15th-century section of the abbey and was transformed in the Baroque period. In 1745, painter Ignazio Hugford created a cycle of works for the refectory, including saints of the Vallombrosan Order, the Last Supper and the Assumption on the ceiling. Vallombrosa itself was founded in the 11th century by Saint Giovanni Gualberto and became the mother house of the Vallombrosan Order. I photographed Vallombrosa Abbey as part of my ongoing work with Agenzia del Demanio, documenting Italy's State-owned architectural heritage and the remarkable histories held within these spaces.
