The first step where the tonearm becomes properly adjustable — RB220 with a bias slider, glass platter, and a bearing Rega has patent pending on. Rega developed the current Planar 2 over two years alongside the Planar 3, and it brings three substantial changes over the Planar 1 rather than one cosmetic one. The tonearm is the big one. The RB220 replaces the RB110 and adds a proper adjustable bias slider plus user-set tracking force via the balance weight — half a turn, 180 degrees, equals one gram of downforce. It is a custom one-piece aluminium arm tube on Rega-designed ultra-low-friction polymer bearings with zero play, hand assembled using Rega’s own tools and torque settings. The platter changes from phenolic resin to 10mm Optiwhite float glass, and the plinth moves to a high-gloss acrylic laminate. Underneath is an 11mm self-securing brass bearing, another Rega patent-pending design, sitting in an improved housing with reduced stress on the fit. The 24V low-noise motor and Advanced EBLT belt carry over from below. Speed is still changed by lifting the glass platter and moving the belt at the pulley. There is no PSU upgrade path here either — the Planar 2 is not on Rega’s Neo compatibility list, so do not let anyone sell you one for it. The Rega Carbon moving magnet is fitted as standard, with the Nd3 available factory-fitted as an option. Features RB220 tonearm with adjustable bias slider and user-set tracking force Rega-designed ultra-low-friction polymer bearings with zero play, patent pending 10mm Optiwhite float glass platter 11mm self-securing brass main bearing, patent pending High-gloss acrylic laminated plinth 24V low-noise, low-vibration motor with Advanced EBLT belt Rega Carbon moving magnet fitted as standard; Nd3 available factory-fitted Lifetime Limited Warranty; designed and assembled in the UK Specifications Type: Belt-drive turntable with tonearm and cartridge fitted Plinth: High-gloss acrylic laminated, or walnut effect laminated Platter: 10mm Optiwhite float glass Bearing: 11mm self-securing brass, patent pending, in an improved housing with reduced stress on the fit Motor: 24V low-noise, low-vibration Speed Change: Manual. Remove the glass platter and move the drive belt between the 33-1/3 and 45 wheels of the pulley. There is no Neo PSU option — the Planar 2 is not on Rega’s compatibility list and has no mini-DIN input Power Supply: External wall supply Tonearm: Hand-assembled RB220, custom one-piece aluminium arm tube, three-point mounting Tonearm Bearings: Rega-designed ultra-low-friction polymer with zero play, patent pending Bias: Adjustable via slider. Rega states the system adjusts bias as the arm tracks across the record, for even tracking throughout playback Tracking Force: Adjustable via the balance weight — half a turn, 180 degrees, equals 1g of downforce. 2g is recommended for the supplied Carbon cartridge Tonearm Geometry: Effective mass 11g; effective length 236.5mm; mounting distance 222mm from platter centre to arm hole centre; offset angle 21.55°; overhang 14.5mm. These figures are shared across the RB220, RB330, RB880 and RB3000 Arm Height / VTA: Not adjustable. This is deliberate on Rega’s part rather than an omission, and the company states its reasoning plainly: it believes the integrity of the arm fixing to the arm board matters more than the questionable facility of arm height adjustment. Rega’s guidance is that the arm should sit reasonably parallel to the record surface or slightly lower at the mounting, and that its optional 2mm spacers are only needed if the rear of a cartridge fouls the record while playing Cartridge: Rega Carbon moving magnet fitted as standard. The Nd3 has been available as a factory-fitted option since May 2024 Drive Belt: Advanced EBLT Dimensions: 447 x 117 x 360 mm (W x H x D), lid closed Weight: 5.5kg Finishes: High-gloss white, high-gloss black, walnut effect. Clear dustcover on the gloss finishes, smoked on the walnut Origin: Rega Research Ltd, Southend-on-Sea, Essex. Rega’s own wording is that every product is designed and assembled in the UK — assembled rather than wholly manufactured, which is the phrasing we use rather than claiming complete UK component sourcing Warranty: Lifetime Limited Warranty against confirmed manufacturing defects. It does not cover wear and tear or parts considered consumable, and unauthorised modification may invalidate it. Rega states cover is contingent on parts remaining available, is not transferable, and is valid only in the country of purchase Not Published: Wow and flutter; rumble; speed accuracy; platter diameter; an itemised box contents list Note: Rega publishes no wow and flutter, rumble or speed accuracy figure for any turntable in the Planar range. We checked every product page and five downloadable Rega manuals — Rega’s manuals are setup guides rather than datasheets, and contain no measurement section at all. Any such number you see quoted against a Rega deck comes from a third-party magazine test, not from Rega
