Rega engineered the Planar 8, in its own words, to encapsulate the essence of Naiad at an affordable price — Naiad being the company’s thirty-thousand-pound reference project. Its defining feature is the skeletal plinth: a Tancast 8 polyurethane foam core skinned in high pressure laminate and then cut away to remove every gram Rega considered unnecessary. It comes out 30% lighter than the original RP8. That leads to a number that surprises people, so it is worth meeting head on. The Planar 8 weighs 4.2kg — lighter than the Planar 6 at 5.2kg, lighter than the Planar 3 at 6.0kg, and identical to the entry-level Planar 1. That is not a downgrade or a typo. It is the whole design philosophy: mass stores energy and gives it back late, so Rega chases stiffness and removes mass wherever it can. The platter runs the opposite argument deliberately. It is a triple layer laminated Pilkington glass assembly that concentrates mass at the outer rim for a flywheel effect while keeping the centre light. Below it sits a new low-mass bearing assembly: a single-piece machined aluminium sub-platter and hardened tool steel spindle in a custom brass housing. The RB880 tonearm’s preloaded zero-tolerance bearing assembly is adjusted to under one thousandth of a millimetre. The custom-matched Neo PSU uses a DSP waveform generator that Rega says produces a near-perfect sine wave at under 0.15% distortion, giving front-panel 33/45 speed change and 0.01 RPM fine adjustment. Cartridge is optional and factory-fitted, and a cartridge alignment protractor is supplied.
