“Brooklyn Navy Yard 2016” – 24" x 30" Print, acrylic and oil sticks on canvasby Steph Whittaker (b. 1981) This piece captures a moment I experienced at the Brooklyn Navy Yard Festival, which takes place in Brooklyn during the Fourth of July weekend. As a teenager living in Brooklyn, I was part of one of the dopest Steelband orchestras, CASYM. We performed at this event and at many other African American cultural gatherings throughout the city. It wasn’t until later in life that I fully realized how inclusive, welcoming, and vibrant these events truly were. No one was excluded, and nothing was presented as superior to others. The atmosphere sustained the roots of the African Diaspora while embracing people of every race, ethnicity, and culture. This original painting includes the artist’s signature on both the front and back. The title and date of completion are also inscribed on the back of the artwork. Each original painting comes with a Certificate of Authenticity and a personalized, hand-written note from the artist, adding a heartfelt touch to every purchase.
