Renaissance is Italy with Michelangelo overhead, built from Charlotte's own photographs of Rome, the Vatican and Florence. Using her signature multi layer photographic technique, Charlotte composites many of her own frames into one image, the way a film editor assembles a scene from many takes. Michelangelo painted the Creation of Adam on a ceiling, so Charlotte photographed it looking up. Here it is the sky and the city is underneath. Adam reaches in from the left. God comes from the right. The two hands nearly touch at the center of the frame, above the castle. That castle is Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome, and it is the only thing in the artwork holding its full weight. Everything else passes through it. Another photograph, in black and white, was taken on the bridge leading to it, and that one brings the crowd: silhouettes of people walking, street lamps, and one of Bernini's angels on the left. It is almost lost in the crowd it stands over. Gold arches sit in the upper middle, from Giotto's Baroncelli Polyptych in Santa Croce, Florence. Halos in rows, Christ crowning the Virgin at the center. It is the oldest painting here, made around 1328. Umbrella pines and the river fill the lower right, the water holding what is above it. Two hundred years of Italian painting and several days of walking around Italy, at the same time and in the same frame.
