It is among the most rare elements in the earths crust with an estimated concentration of 1 part per billion. In 2024 only about 62 tonnes of rhenium was mined worldwide compared to about 3500 tonnes of gold and 2,500,000,000 tonnes of iron. Rhenium has the highest boiling point of all elements, the second highest melting point of all elemental metals and is among the most dense. It's annealed form is very ductile and its alloys can be superconductive. These properties make this metal critical and essentially irreplaceable in military and other high performance jet engine components. With this latest batch using refined sintering techniques a density of about 20.47 g/cm3 was achieved, making them among the closest to theoretical density (21.02 g/cm3) of any of our prior rhenium batches. Only osmium, iridium, and platinum are more dense. We have also had this new batch of rhenium ingots professional polished on the front and back surfaces and at least we think they are quite stunning. These ingots can still have minor imperfections such as tiny etch chips, faint porosity and surface scratches, and uneven polishing that do detract from the value of this exceptionally rare bullion product and not all may be polished quite as well as the one pictured.
