Cultural and Historical Context: Sobolo is one of the hibiscus-based teas of West Africa, alongside the similar bissap, zobo, and wonjo, as they are called in other parts of the region (or sorrel in the Caribbean), the beverage family that would inspire the creation of the "red drink" of African-American culture. Sobolo tends to be spicier than its cousins, flavored with plenty of West Africa-endemic spices such as hwentia.
