Ricinus communis 'Impala' is a striking ornamental variety of the castor bean plant, prized for its dramatic foliage and architectural presence in the garden. It features deeply lobed, glossy palmate leaves that emerge in a rich bronze-red and mature to a deep burgundy, creating a bold contrast against its stout, reddish stems. This fast-growing annual can reach heights of 4 to 6 feet, forming an upright, bushy structure that serves well as a focal point or backdrop in mixed borders. In midsummer to early fall, it produces clusters of spiny, bright red seed capsules that add further ornamental interest. 'Impala' thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, showing excellent heat and drought tolerance once established. While admired for its aesthetic qualities, all parts of the plant, especially the seeds, are highly toxic if ingested and should be handled with caution. Zones 5-11 Germination To germinate Ricinus communis 'Impala' seeds, begin by soaking the seeds in warm water for 24 hours to soften the hard seed coat and promote faster sprouting. Sow the seeds indoors in individual pots or seed trays filled with a well-draining seed-starting mix, about 1 inch deep. Maintain a warm temperature of around 70 to 80°F and keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Germination typically occurs within 10 to 21 days. Once the seedlings are well established and the risk of frost has passed, they can be transplanted outdoors into a sunny, sheltered location with well-drained soil. Handle seeds with care, as they are highly toxic.
