This vivid 1930 lithograph by Micao Kono celebrates the celebrated French stage actor Robert Jysor, capturing both his commanding presence and the theatrical world that surrounded him. Against a daring pink background, Jysor appears in formal evening wear, encircled by miniature figures of the many roles he played, from gallant soldiers and courtiers to comic swashbucklers and noblemen. The result is both portrait and performance, a lively tribute to a man who was, quite literally, many characters in one! Japanese-born artist Micao Kono made his mark in Paris during the interwar years, designing posters for theaters, cabarets, and luxury brands with a distinctly cosmopolitan flair. His work combined Eastern elegance with the streamlined curves and bold color of French Art Deco design. This poster, printed by Imp. de la Meurthe, is one of his most theatrical creations, bursting with stage energy and a sense of modern glamour.
