Quick Facts: ABV: 12.5–13.5% | Origin: Robertson Valley, Western Cape, South Africa | Varietal: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon | Producer: Robertson Winery Production & Heritage Robertson Winery draws fruit from 35 grape farmers across the Robertson Valley in the Breede River Valley, some of whom represent the seventh generation on their land. The valley receives just 200mm of rainfall annually, but irrigation from the Breede River combined with calcium-rich limestone soils creates growing conditions that coax ripe, concentrated dark fruit from Cabernet Sauvignon vines. This unique terroir — semi-arid heat tempered by river-fed viticulture over mineral-dense soil — gives the wine a character distinct from the warmer Stellenbosch or cooler Constantia benchmarks of South African Cabernet. Tasting Notes Aroma: The nose opens with brambly berry and black plum, moving into ripe cherry and a subtle thread of cassis. Behind the fruit sit quieter accents of cinnamon stick, violet, and a whisper of milk chocolate. Taste: The entry is fruit-forward — blackcurrant and plum arrive first, supported by darker cherry and soft field-berry sweetness at the mid-palate. A gentle herbaceous undertone and fresh acidity keep the fruit honest, while velvety tannins provide structure without grip. Finish: Medium in length with lingering plum skin and a faint spice note. The tannins resolve smoothly, leaving a clean, dry impression. How to Drink Robertson Cabernet Sauvignon This Cabernet drinks well at a light cellar chill — around 16–18°C — poured into a standard Bordeaux glass to let the dark fruit aromatics open up. It works equally well as a versatile cocktail and mixed-drink red: Classic Red Wine Sangria: The bold plum and berry core holds up against citrus, brandy, and seasonal fruit. Kalimotxo: The wine's soft tannins and cassis sweetness balance the bitter edge of cola in this Spanish two-ingredient staple. Red Wine Spritzer: Topped with sparkling water and a squeeze of orange, the fresh acidity and berry fruit translate well into a lighter warm-weather serve. Best For Weeknight dinner pairing with grilled red meats or pasta Introducing a friend to South African Cabernet Sauvignon Stocking a home bar with a reliable, crowd-friendly red Bringing a solid bottle to a braai or casual gathering Frequently Asked Questions What does Robertson Cabernet Sauvignon taste like? It leads with ripe blackcurrant, plum, and cherry, backed by soft tannins, gentle spice, and a fresh acidity that keeps the fruit balanced. Subtle herbaceous and chocolate undertones add complexity without heaviness. How does Robertson Cabernet Sauvignon compare to Nederburg Cabernet Sauvignon? Both are widely available South African Cabernets at a similar value tier, but Robertson sources exclusively from the limestone-rich Robertson Valley, which tends to produce a softer, more fruit-driven style. Nederburg draws from Paarl and the broader Western Cape, often yielding a slightly more structured, tannic profile. Is Robertson Cabernet Sauvignon good for sipping neat? Yes — its velvety tannins and bright fruit make it approachable on its own without needing extended decanting or bottle age, though a brief 15–20 minute opening in the glass helps the aromatics develop. Where is Robertson Cabernet Sauvignon made? It is produced by Robertson Winery in the Robertson Valley, a sub-region of the Breede River Valley in South Africa's Western Cape. The valley's semi-arid climate and limestone soils, irrigated by the Breede River, define the wine's character. What foods pair well with Robertson Cabernet Sauvignon? Grilled lamb chops benefit from the wine's plum richness and soft tannins. Beef bobotie mirrors its subtle spice notes. Hard aged cheeses like mature Cheddar complement the cassis depth. Mushroom risotto echoes the earthy undertone on the finish. Dark chocolate desserts align with the wine's milk-chocolate aromatics. What sizes does Robertson Cabernet Sauvignon come in? The standard bottling is 750ml, which is the most widely available format. Is Robertson Cabernet Sauvignon worth the price? Robertson Cabernet Sauvignon positions as an entry-level expression that consistently punches above its weight — a Gold medal at the Gold Wine Awards and a 91-point aggregated score for the 2017 vintage are unusual achievements at this value tier, making it a strong pick for everyday drinking. Why Robertson Cabernet Sauvignon? What separates this wine from the crowded field of affordable South African reds is its terroir story. The Robertson Valley's limestone and calcium-rich soils — irrigated by the Breede River in a region that sees barely 200mm of rain per year — produce Cabernet Sauvignon with a distinctive softness and fruit concentration that heavier-rainfall regions struggle to replicate. The collaborative farming model, drawing on 35 growers with generational knowledge of this specific valley, adds a consistency that single-estate operations at this price point rarely match. The result is a reliably fruit-forward, gold medal–winning Cabernet that delivers far more complexity than its price bracket suggests.
