The Artwork Yumari Jukurrpa The Yumari Jukurrpa, or Rock Pools Dreaming, tells the story of a forbidden relationship between a man and a woman from different kinship groups. The couple met secretly at Yumari, a culturally significant place distinguished by a group of rocks and natural pools in the desert. The concentric circles within the artwork represent the pools of water held among the rocks, while the surrounding lines, pathways and intricate forms evoke the movement, landscape and ancestral story connected to this important place. About the Artist Joy Nangala Brown Joy Nangala Brown was born in Alice Springs in 1966 and grew up in the remote Tanami Desert region of Central Australia. She is the daughter of celebrated Pintupi artist Pegleg Jampijinpa. Joy’s paintings depict ancestral Dreaming stories and cultural knowledge passed down through her family over many generations. The traditional homelands of the Pintupi people extend across the remote Western Desert region near the border of Western Australia and the Northern Territory. The Pintupi were among the last Aboriginal peoples to encounter European Australians. In 1984, a family group who had continued living a traditional nomadic life in the desert became widely known as the Pintupi Nine. Joy paints with the internationally acclaimed Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation at Yuendumu, a remote Aboriginal community approximately 290 kilometres north-west of Alice Springs. Warlukurlangu Artists is an Aboriginal-owned organisation supporting artists while helping to preserve and strengthen the culture, stories, language and artistic traditions of Central Australia.
