Most of the younger Islanders welcomed the idea in hope of material prosperity, whereas the older Islanders were strongly against the Government’s proposal. The decision to evacuate the population of Little Todday to the mainland untied young and old in resistance, but it required the discovery that a hitherto unknown gull was nesting on a small island off Little Todday before public opinion came to the rescue of the Islanders.”
