Rococo ormolu (gilt-bronze) chatelaine c.1750 richly decorated with classical figures and scenes. The top scene represents Plenty, the goddess Ceres with a sheep and Cupid at her f eet, further down Cupid and a goat,Cupid and a Peacock, more sheep representing agriculture,the connecting links formed of double entwined cornucopiae, all further embellished with shells,scrolls and Ho-Ho birds. An incredible gold chatelaine with a similar design in the V and A has hallmarks for 1755-56. 5.5 by 2.5 inches. The long hook at the back would have hung from the belt of a fashionable lady. The c18th term would have been a 'chain' or 'equipage' from which might hang might hang a range of different objects: a watch, seals, a box for a thimble, or an 'étui' containing sewing, writing or cosmetic implements.
