Why This Watch Matters If looking for a vintage gold Rolex, look no further than this ref. 6567 with an uncommon dial featuring Arabic numerals at three, six, and nine o'clock as well as a meters first depth rating at 12 o'clock. Let's not forget that beautiful patina! The Full Story The 1950s is arguably one of the most important decades when looking to vintage Rolex. In these ten years, Rolex virtually revamped their entire catalogue by introducing the Submariner and GMT-Master and transitioning away from what are now referred to as "Bubbleback" Oyster cases to the Oyster shape that carried the brand through the rest of the 20th century. A few weeks ago, we were pleased to offer a ref. 6298 Oyster Perpetual from 1953, nicknamed the "ovettone" due to a slightly domed caseback. That watch was truly a transitional Oyster case, in between the true Bubblebacks that came before it and the generation from which this ref. 6567 for sale today hails. Rolex's ref. 6567 was used through the 1950s for Oyster Perpetuals in a 34mm case and are often seen in gold. The model almost always features a fluted bezel and spans many dial variations. This size Oyster case has grown in popularity over the past few years, with collectors leaning towards smaller diameter cases for their versatility and under-the-radar vintage feel. The ref. 6567 being offered here is a great embodiment of that same if-you-know-you-know trend that is growing in the vintage world. This example features an ultra uncommon dial with Arabic numerals for hour markers at three, six, and nine o'clock and a very rare depth rating. At 12 o'clock on the dial, beneath the brand and model, is an additional line of text reading "50m=165ft," indicating that this Oyster case is rated as water-resistant to 50 meters or 165 feet. Depth ratings have become a common feature of Rolex sport models today but, back in the mid 1950s, this was not the case. For context, the first Submariner with a depth rating on the dial was released in 1956, the same year this Oyster Perpetual dates to. Adding together the Explorer-style Arabic numeral hour markers with the depth rating, the dial makes this particular ref. 6567 extremely desirable. This OP is the perfect watch for someone looking for a classic gold Rolex with a twist. The combination of the 3-6-9, uncommon depth rating, and the beautiful patina on the dial this checks all the boxes. The dial has aged to a patina that is consistent and extremely attractive, making this example even more unique than the attributes it was produced with back in 1956. We paired this Rolex OP with our Sedona Watch Strap in Dark Brown to accentuate the yellow gold case and hour markers as well as lean into the patina that has developed on the surface of the dial.
