ROM045 – Emperor Vespasian Vespasian emerged from the turmoil of AD 69 – the famous Year of the Four Emperors – to establish the Flavian dynasty and restore stability to the Roman Empire. Unlike many emperors born into Rome's highest aristocracy, Vespasian had built his reputation through military and administrative service. He commanded Roman forces during the invasion of Britain and later directed the campaign to suppress the Jewish revolt. His reign from AD 69 to 79 also saw construction begin on the great amphitheatre we know today as the Colosseum.
