This interesting member of the brassicas family produces tight heads of neon green "broccoli" that have a unique fractal like shape. Flavor is more like cauliflower in my opinion with just a touch of broccoli. It also goes by the names fractal broccoli, broccolo romanesco, or Roman cauliflower. This cultivar is tought to have poriginated in the region of Lazio Italy, and Rome is it's capital. Thus why it is called Romanesco broccoli. We have a very small window to grow traditional brassicas like broccoli and cauliflower in Florida. These crops bolt very easily when there is a hot day. Therefore, I grow brassicas during late fall, winter, and early spring. This can also be challenging because winter weather in Florida fluctuates so much. We have a cold day followed by a very warm day. Again, this triggers traditional brassicas to bolt. I find that if I have not harvested all of my broccoli/cauliflower by March, then its too late.
