Ronde de Nice is a French heirloom that produces early and prolific yields of flavorful, round zucchini with beautiful, mottled skins. Originating from coastal town of Nice which sits along the Mediterranean coast of the French Riviera, this unique heirloom is beloved for its unique shape, fine flavor and tender bite. Zucchini enthusiasts boast that this variety is delicious at any stage, with a sweet, mild flavor early on and a more savory, nutty flavor as the squash size up. As such, the flavorful, round zucchini are commonly prepared in a variety of manners, from sauteing to grilling to stuffing and roasting. Although not resistant to powdery mildew, Ronde de Nice is more tolerant than other zucchini varieties we've tried, possibly a consequence of it being developed in a coastal region that experiences high humidity and a frequent sea breeze during the summer months. Similarly, although the variety is not bug resistant, it seems to be less prone to pest issues and holds on the longest, in our experience, when confronted with intense squash bug pressure. We also appreciate that Ronde de Nice matures in just 45-50 days, placing it among the earliest of our summer squash varieties.
