It was not such a rosy picture though for Rosa Balistreri, an Italian singer and musician, that grew up in the sorrow and captivity of an impoverished woman in the 1950s living in Sicily, Southern Italy. Rosa’s experience drove her to flee her family home in her early 20s and seek out a life beyond the violence and ignorance of her rural upbringing. Some say that it was her harsh upbringing that charged her deep voice with a distinct melancholy that made her a Sicilian icon of the 20th century.
