The two main roses in perfumery are Rose Damascena and Rose Centifolia. Rose Damascena is rich, warm, and slightly spicy while Rose Centifolia is soft, fresh, and powdery. The latt er is great for adding a soft rosy floralcy while the Damascena gives a bolder and more intense rose heart note. The finest extracts of Rose Centifolia are from Grasse (Rose de Mai) but due to the extremely high cost, most harvests now come from Tunisia. Rose de Mai comes from roses harvested during the month of May only, while Tunisian Rose centifolia is harvested at different times through the year; due to the hotter climate, the Tunisian absolute has a lighter, fresher, and slightly more citrusy profile with a delicate floral character.
