Situated in the heart of the Chianti district, Montevertine is located about halfway between Florence and Siena. The estate, who history stretches back to the 11th Century, had fallen into abandon and disrepair until 1967 when Sergio Manetti acquired it. He began planting vineyards, which over the next few decades grew in acclaim, crescendoing with Le Pergole Torte label—widely considered the planet's greatest Sangiovese wine. While labeled a Toscana Rosso (and oftentimes mistaken for for Super Tuscans), Montevertine's wines actually adhere strictly to Chianti Classico law. This Toscana Rosso, Montevertine's standard bearer, is aged 24 months in large Slavonian oak barrels and is composed of 90% Sangiovese and 10% Canaiolo (and a splash of Colorino. Rich and sumptuous, full of red and blue fruits, lavender, rose, mint, and spice, this is a tremendous Italian wine. 13.5% ABV
