Males may color down after shipping or when moved to a new aquarium, but they usually regain color once settled and comfortable. Origin and Habitat Native Region: Lake Malawi-wide distribution. Natural Habitat: Open sand and shallow-water areas. Physical Characteristics Size: 11-16 inches. Coloration: Mature males can show stronger display color, while stress, shipping, or a new tank may temporarily reduce color. Body Shape: Large, powerful hap body built for active movement over open sand. Behavior and Temperament Temperament: More peaceful, though adult males can still be territorial with conspecifics. Social Behavior: Best kept with large, similarly tempered Lake Malawi haps in a spacious aquarium. Aquarium Care Tank Size: A 125 gallon aquarium or larger is recommended for adults. Water Parameters: 74-84°F, pH 7.4-8.4, hard water. Tank Setup: Use a sand substrate, open swimming space, scattered rockwork for sight breaks, and strong filtration.
