Royal Catchfly (Silene regia) Royal Catchfly is one of the most striking native wildflowers of the tallgrass prairie. In midsummer, tall stems are crowned with brilliant scarlet-red flowers that seem to glow against the surrounding greenery. The color is almost impossible to ignore and remains vibrant even from a distance, making this a natural focal point in sunny gardens and prairie plantings. The flowers are held well above the foliage, giving the plant an airy appearance despite its strong upright form. Once widespread throughout Midwestern prairies, Royal Catchfly has become increasingly rare as native grasslands have disappeared.
