Through the years, the brothers lived by the centuries old Trappist tradition of contemplation and study, private prayer and common worship, earning their living by the work of their own hands.As the new millennium began, the monks were reduced in number and growing older. The Trappist General Chapter voted to close their novitiate. Considering the survival of this contemplative monastery in their missionary diocese to be vital, the American Trappist monks agreed to offer their monastery to monks of the Vietnamese Congregation of the Cistercian Order for a new foundation. After several years of dialogue and experimentation, the new community was formed in 2019, with the American Trappists living on as guests with their Vietnamese Cistercian brothers.The long tradition of their fruitcake bakery continues with the new foundation. Each year the monks make thousands of their popular fruitcakes, which are known for their deep, complex flavor that improves with age.
