Rush was formed in August 1968 in the Willowdale neighborhood of Toronto. The original lineup included Alex Lifeson on guitar, Jeff Jones on bass and John Rutsey on drums. Jones was soon replaced by Geddy Lee, and, in 1974, after the release of the group’s debut album, Rutsey left and was replaced by Neil Peart. That lineup Lee on vocals, bass and keyboards; Lifeson on guitar, and Peart on drums — has remained stable throughout the years. In the early years, Rush performed around on the Toronto scene. In 1973 Rush released its first single, a cover of Buddy Holly’s “Not Fade Away.” Swing and a miss… the record didn’t do well. In 1974, after forming its own record label (Moon Records), Rush released its first album (Rush). After a slow start, one of the songs on the album (Working Man) was picked up by Mercury Records and sales began to skyrocket. The rest is history. Since then, Rush has successfully released 19 studio albums and 11 live albums receiving 24 gold records and 14 platinum records along the way. Rush is estimated to have sold over 40 million albums worldwide. According to the RIAA, Rush’s sales rank them third, only behind the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. The subject of this painting is Rush’s 2112 which was the 4th studio album from Rush. It was released on April Fool’s Day in 1976. If you are a Rush fan, mark your calendar to listen to the album with close friends on December 21st every year.
