It was developed for fast testing and optimisation of stack components, like carbon felt electrode/bipolar plate materials and membranes. Electrodes must be at least 1 mm thick, but can be used for any type of electrode material. Different electrode compressions can be obtained by different spacer thicknesses. Any type of bipolar plate material can be used (both hard and soft). The most unique feature of the S-cell is that it can be operated with or with-out bipolar plates, there is no equivalent on the market of flow battery test cells. Performance tests have shown that area specific resistances down to about 0.60 Ωcm2 can be obtained, i.e. the cell design does have an influence on the intrinsic cell performance.
