Advanced keywork Its body design is similar to that of the S10, made from Grenadilla (also known as African Blackwood) with silver plated keywork. The key configuration is that of the English Thumb Plate system and all in all the instrument produces a good, resonant, well balanced tone. For the Conservatoire System model, see the S20C. The key differences between this model and the student S10 model are to do with the keywork configuration. This model has semi-automatic octaves and C-D, C-C# left hand trill keys as well as C-D right hand trill keys. These features are essential when playing at a higher level. Thumplate oboes are widely used in the UK as starting instruments. They feature simplified keywork and a narrower bore to make them more accessible for younger players. Dual system oboes have more advanced keywork and generally a bigger bore, and are intended for players of a higher standard doing solo or orchestral work. Conservatoire system oboes are mainly found in Continental Europe and the US, and have a different fingering technique altogether which is also intended for more advanced players.
