Sage is an ancient sacred herb used during ceremonies and smudging rituals. Traditional Native American smudging ceremonies use White Sage, Dakota Sage, and Desert Sage. Long thought by these communities to possess spiritual cleansing properties, modern science has discovered that sage contains anti-microbial properties as well. Smudging has been traditionally used to safeguard against negativity that could interfere with sleep. Some research suggests that sage contains compounds that could help ease insomnia. Classic garden sage (Salvia officinalis) which is sometimes burned like white sage, has also been used by some to improve sleep and soothe anxiety.
