Sailing Lantern is a portable, rechargeable lantern. It is engineered to be easy to maintain, disassemble and repair, and designed to last a lifetime. Overview — A collaboration between Sir Jony Ive of LoveFrom and Gen Tarao of BALMUDA, who share a reverence for design and the creative process as well as an obsessive attention to detail, whether an exterior feature or interior detail — The project began with Jony’s preoccupation with the quality of LED light that could express the gentle, diffused glow of a candle but with a range between a warm yellow glow and a cool white light — Combines LED technology with classic design, inspired by the glass and cage construction of historic nautical lanterns and Fresnel lamps — Packaging is a structurally efficient paper cylinder that follows the geometry of the lantern. Die-cut foam holds the lantern in place, with the lanyard and instruction manuals — Sailing Lantern retails for $4,800 in a limited production run of 1,000 Technical specifications — Portable rechargeable lantern — Precision-machined stainless steel enclosure — Diffuser in precision-ground, ultra-clear, low-iron, SiO2 quartz glass— IP67 waterproof enclosure — Enhanced humidity and salt resistance — Custom-knit, UV-resistant recycled polyester lanyard— Dimensions: 174mm height x 113mm diameter— Mass: 1.5 kg — Color temperature range: 1600K–2700K— Light intensity: 60 lumens — Rechargeable lithium-ion battery — USB-C charging port— Battery life: maximum setting 4 hours; medium 20–30 hours; minimum setting 150 hours — Low power alerts at 20%, 10% and 1% charge
