Saint Christopher is usually represented as a strongly built, bearded, middle aged man, leaning on a staff, with the Holy Child on his shoulder. Although Christopher was never mentioned in the Bible, he takes a prominent place among the Saints. His cult is mainly based on legend and confined to local calendars. His fame derives from the pious legend of him being a "Christ-bearer". Legends tell of him living near a dangerous stream and carrying others safely across. One day he offered to help a small child. The child was almost too heavy for him to bear, and is later revealed to be Jesus (who bore the weight of the world's sins on his shoulder.
