Saint Longinus was the Roman centurion who pierced the side of Jesus with a lance as He hung upon the Cross. The blood and water that flowed forth touched Longinus’ eyes, miraculou sly healing his failing sight. In awe, he proclaimed, “Vere Filius Dei erat iste” — “Truly, this was the Son of God.” After spreading the Gospel, Longinus was captured for his faith; his eyes were gouged out before he was ultimately martyred.
