Latin name - Salacca zalacca Snake Fruit or Snakeskin fruit is one of those tropicals that’s oft-mentioned and rarely seen in our area. The plant is not a woody tree, but a short-stemmed palm that thrives as an understory crop in part shade. Razor-sharp spines defend this palms prized fruits that cluster at the base. The scaly (and yes prickly) brown skin lends to the “Snake fruit” moniker. Salak Palms are native to Indonesia where multiple varieties are cultivated for various specificities like alcohol production, sugar content, or texture. Generally, snake fruits are crunchy and moist, sweet and acidic, with a hint of starchy astringency.
