Salarias segmentatus The Segmented Sailfin Blenny, also known as the Segmented Blenny, is an engaging and useful reef fish prized for its algae-grazing habits and distinctive appearance. Adults display a series of vertical yellow, tan, and reddish-brown bands that create a segmented pattern across the body, along with the characteristic large eyes and expressive facial features common to combtooth blennies. Like other members of the genus Salarias, they lack a swim bladder and spend much of their time perched on rocks, hopping between ledges, or exploring crevices. An aquarium with abundant live rock, natural algae growth, and numerous hiding places is essential for their long-term success. This species typically grows to about 4 inches (10 cm) and is best maintained in aquariums of 30 gallons or larger. They are generally peaceful toward dissimilar tankmates but may become territorial toward other blennies or fish with a similar shape and feeding niche. A secure lid is recommended, as they can occasionally jump when startled. In the wild, Salarias segmentatus inhabits shallow coral reefs, lagoons, and algae-covered rocky habitats throughout the western Pacific, including Indonesia, New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and Palau, where it spends much of the day grazing on microalgae and biofilm. Primarily herbivorous, this species thrives on a diet of natural algae supplemented with spirulina-based foods, marine algae preparations, herbivore pellets, and occasional frozen offerings such as mysis shrimp. Regular access to vegetable-based foods is important for maintaining healthy body condition and coloration. Generally considered reef-safe, the Segmented Sailfin Blenny typically coexists well with corals and most invertebrates while providing valuable algae control, making it both a practical and attractive addition to a mature reef aquarium.
