Salmon are anadromous, meaning they are born in freshwater, live most of their lives in salt water and then migrate back to the freshwater they were born in. Salmon are a keystone species-a species upon which many other animals depend- because they provide nutrients to the river and surrounding area where they spawn and die and are also a major source of food for other species such as killer whales and bears.
