Sand Sifting Starfish – Archaster typicus The Sand Sifting Starfish, also known as the Indo-Pacific Comb Star, is a distinctive marine invertebrate with a broad central disc, five tapered arms, and rows of pale marginal spines. Its cream, gray, and brown patterning provides excellent camouflage against the substrate, where it spends much of its time buried beneath the surface. Native to sandy and silty habitats throughout the tropical Indo-Pacific, Archaster typicus moves through soft sediment in search of small mollusks, worms, crustaceans, and other bottom-dwelling prey. Adults can reach approximately 8 inches across. The common trade name is also occasionally applied to similar-looking species such as Astropecten polyacanthus, so appearance and collection origin may vary between shipments. Its burrowing activity can keep the sand surface visibly disturbed, but this species should not be treated as a simple cleanup-crew animal. It consumes beneficial sandbed organisms along with unwanted organic material and can exhaust its natural food supply in smaller or immature aquariums. Long-term care is best attempted in a large, established reef aquarium or fish-only aquarium with an expansive, biologically productive sandbed. A substrate approximately 2–4 inches deep allows the starfish to bury itself and forage naturally. Coarse crushed coral, sharp gravel, and bare-bottom aquariums are unsuitable. The available sandbed footprint is more important than water volume alone. Dense rockwork should be arranged so it cannot shift or trap the starfish, while open routes should remain available around and beneath the aquascape. Moderate, indirect water movement is appropriate, but exposed pump and overflow intakes should be guarded. This species should only be introduced to a thoroughly established aquarium with a productive population of sand-dwelling organisms. Adding one to a new, sterile, or frequently disturbed sandbed creates a substantial risk of starvation. Keep only one in most home aquariums; multiple specimens require a significantly larger area and compete for the same limited food supply. Acclimate slowly because sea stars are sensitive to abrupt changes in temperature, salinity, and other water conditions. Handle as little as possible and never lift or move the animal by one arm. Diet and Feeding The Sand Sifting Starfish is primarily a predator of small animals living within the substrate. Members of the genus Astropecten consume mollusks, polychaete worms, crustaceans, and other benthic organisms, often swallowing small prey whole. It is not an algae eater and should not be expected to control diatoms, hair algae, or cyanobacteria. A mature, biologically active sandbed must provide the foundation of its diet. Supplemental foods may include small pieces of chopped clam, mussel, shrimp, mysis shrimp, sinking carnivore pellets, and finely chopped marine seafood placed beneath the sand near the starfish. Offer a small targeted feeding once or twice weekly when the animal accepts prepared food. Supplemental feeding does not guarantee long-term success. Some specimens ignore offered foods, while others continue depleting the sandbed faster than its microfauna can recover. Monitor the starfish for loss of body mass, shortened or thinning arms, slow movement, tissue deterioration, or failure to emerge during feeding. Temperament and Tankmates This sea star is peaceful toward fish and does not display territorial behavior. Suitable tankmates include peaceful reef fish, clownfish, gobies, cardinalfish, tangs, blennies, and other species that do not prey upon echinoderms. It is not peaceful toward all sand-dwelling invertebrates. Small snails, juvenile bivalves, worms, tiny crustaceans, brittle stars, and other infauna may be consumed while it forages. This predatory activity can significantly reduce the biodiversity of a live sandbed. Avoid housing it with harlequin shrimp, puffers, triggerfish, large predatory wrasses, aggressive crabs, or other animals known to attack or consume sea stars. Reef Compatibility The Sand Sifting Starfish is reef safe. It does not normally eat healthy corals and can move beneath established reef structures without deliberately damaging them. The primary concern is its effect on beneficial sandbed life. It may consume small mollusks, worms, crustaceans, and other organisms that contribute to a diverse substrate ecosystem. Unsecured coral frags resting on the sand may also be shifted or buried as the starfish moves below them.
