Sanderlings are long-distant migrants. They are known for incredible migratory journeys of 1,800 up to 6,000 miles to coastal beaches worldwide, including South America, Africa, an d Australia. They travel between Arctic tundra nesting grounds and wintering habitats twice a year. I first saw sanderlings at the Point Reyes State Park in California before I started birding. There were a dozen of them in a group running into the water edge to find food in the sand as the wave retreated, then rushed back to shore when the next wave rolled up.
