Sanderlings are long-distant migrants. They are known for incredible migratory journeys of 1,800 up to 6,000 miles to coastal beaches worldwide, including South America, Africa, an d Australia. They travel between Arctic tundra nesting grounds and wintering habitats twice a year. Each cup has three hand-painted sanderlings wrapping around. I made two, and they are very similar. I sold this size of cup/bowl at a market, and people who came by and picked it up call it a sake bowl, a holder for their daily pills, a shot glass, a sauce bowl, etc., which made me happy that a piece can serve many functions.
